17th International Architecture Exhibition 22 May - 21 November 2021

How will we live together? is the title of the 17th International Architecture Exhibition, curated by architect Hashim Sarkis.

Scheduled for 2020, it has been postponed to 2021 due to Covid. The future challenge, where and how to live, is the most important to face. The migrant pressures accentuate the need to find space for aggregation, for participation. The Architecture Biennale studies how to understand some of these characteristics. Coexistence must start in the cities. Cities are the attraction magnet of all the world's instabilities, they become full of marginalised both materially and metaphorically. Yet, there is no other solution. From the conflicts and discussions inside the metropolis, a new place must be found, where strangers talk to each other, creating a modern hope.

Russia Pavilion

The Russian Pavilion is an idea. It is empty, nothing is exposed, the rooms are free, emptied, ready to be filled. It actually shows the renovation of the magnificent Russian Pavilion, built by the architect Alexei Shchusev. It was started during the Tsars, 1913, and ended with Lenin in charge.

Japan Pavilion

Or, the deconstruction of an old wooden house in Japan Pavilion. Disassembled in Japan, transported to Venice and rebuilt with more modern tools.

Korea Pavilion

Or, the school in the Korean Pavilion. The destiny of education passes through physical structures.

“There’d he even less chance in a next life,” she smiled.
“In the old days, people woke up at dawn to cook food to give to monks. That’s why they had good meals to eat. But people these days just buy ready-to-eat food in plastic bags for the monks. As the result, we may have to eat meals from plastic bags for the next several lives.”
