Federico Barocci Urbino

The emotion of modern painting

20.06 - 06.10.2024

Urbino, Palazzo Ducale, Urbino

Galleria Nazionale delle Marche

Curated by Luigi Gallo and Anna Maria Ambrosini Massari with Giovanni Russo and Luca Baroni

The painter Federico Barocci was born in Urbino in 1535 and died there in 1612.

After his first studies in his native place, Federico Barocci wanted to go to study in Rome, where, before he was born, his fellow citizen Raffaello Sanzio had died. A non-random choice because Raphael's supreme art is found in Rome more than in Urbino.

Federico Barocci, with his artistic gestures, his mannerism, his vivid colours, becomes one of the most famous painters in Italy.

His characters are always beautiful, elegant, healthy, never vulgar regardless of their origins. A warm red predominates in contrast with cold tones.

The Urbino exhibition brings together seventy-six paintings and drawings by Barocci representing every phase of his career.

“There’d he even less chance in a next life,” she smiled.
“In the old days, people woke up at dawn to cook food to give to monks. That’s why they had good meals to eat. But people these days just buy ready-to-eat food in plastic bags for the monks. As the result, we may have to eat meals from plastic bags for the next several lives.”
